It's the first record with Christian Coma playing drums. He replaced Sandra Alvarenga, when she left the band to join Modern Day Escape. The track Set The World On Fire was going to be used in Scream 4, but wasn't included in the film. On May 3, they released a preview of Youth And Whisky. The full tracklisting of the album was relased on iTunes, with an exclusive Bonus Track called Smoke And Mirrors.
The song Set The World On Fire was in the Transformers: Dark of the Moon soundtrack. It's also the theme song for WWE Hell in a Cell (2011).
"Ultimately, the influence for the second record was very much shaped by fan reaction for the first record. Over the last year we've seen so much and done so much, meeting people and hearing their stories, you can't help but be affected... So musically and lyrically we tried to shape our second record based off those feelings and those emotions." "I still love those songs on the first record, but these songs to me are so much better. I feel them in a way I didn't on the first record. This is an adult writing songs this time. Everything is bigger, more songs, more vocals, more melodies. And it all came naturally, it's not an attempt to try to outdo our first record, but we wanted to show how we had naturally grown as a band and as songwriters. This is my favourite record I've ever made, and most importantly, the best album anybody's ever made." -Andy Biersack.
This album had positive reviews from most critics. Todd Jolicouer of The Rock Pit said: "The vocals are perfectly balanced with the guitar solos and this disc is light years ahead of their debut". Jen Thomas of Rock Sound didn't have a very much positive opinion of the album: "The sound no longer matches the carefully-created image but the music's decent nonetheless". But Ryan Cooper from About.com really liked it, he said: "The band seemed to have improved a lot. I've grown to really appreciate their music."
Josh Abraham, who's worked with Linkin Park, 30 Seconds To Mars, Korn..., produced this album. "That first meeting we wrote the title track, and we immediately just canceled all our other meetings and went with Josh and his team." -Andy Biersack.
This album reached #3 in the UK Rock chart. And it debuted at #17 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. And #73 on the Canadian Albums chart.
The first single was Fallen Angels. It was inspired in Satan and one-third of God's angels, when they rebelled against God, starting a war in Heaven and were cast out of Heaven to the Earth, becoming Fallen Angels. The story was introduced to Andy by Richard Villa, who made their cover art.
"He's very much into biblical stories, and he found the whole story of the fallen angels who were the ultimate outcasts. They weren't sent to hell, but they weren't allowed in Heaven. They had nowhere to go. They weren't human either, so they had this lonely existence. They wound up banding together and creating their own gang of sorts. We really liked that and wound up writing a song very much based on how we could equate that to our lives." -Andy Biersack.
The video was released on YouTube on May 23, 2011. It was later released on iTunes. In the video, Black Veil Brides fall from space inside of comets and when they land, they come out and play the song. The director was Nathan Cox.
The second single was The Legacy. The song is about the legacy that the band will leave to change the world.
"In life, everyone wants to leave a legacy. This song is about when we first starting touring together as a band and the absolute love and devotion we have received from the BVB Army. Together we have created something amazing. This will be our legacy". -Andy Biersack.
It was their first charting single. Being #28 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.
The video was filmed on May 15, 2011 and released on May 30. The band is playing in a scrapyard while fire is shooting from pipes behind them. Some scenes are during the day, and some during a rainy night. In the end of the video, they show the scrapyard in the night and the BVB acronyms on fire.
It was directed by Patrick Fogarty.
The third single was Rebel Love Song. Andy explained the meaning of this song to the Kerrang! Magazine. "That song is about the idea of finding something that you can run to, about making that Utopian Society in your head and doing what you can to bust out and get there."
The song won the Kerrang! Award for Best Single.
The video was released on October 19, 2011. A six-minute director's cut was released on their Rebels EP.
